PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)
PNF is a manually assisted-resisted movement therapy which aids recovery
from muscular, joint, neurologic or whole body injury.

The specific, directed movement patterns maximize:

*soft tissue capacity for stretching
* muscular strength and endurance
*joint stability and mobility
*neuromuscular coordination
*normal patterns of movement and gait

Developed in the 1940s, the patterns used in PNF resulted from the analysis of functional movement,
utilizing theories of neurophysiology and motor development, control, and learning.

PNF strengthens and stretches the body through diagonal patterns, using multiple joints through
combined planes of motion.

PNF therapy aids you in recovery by stimulating your body to use muscles which have become
inhibited by injury. It retrains your brain to move joints in ways it has forgotten, and helps your nervous
system regain balanced, coordinated movement.

Your PNF therapist’s hands are ever-present, guiding you with sensory cues:  specific auditory,
visual, cutaneous (touch), and proprioceptive (joint alignment and position) feedback. PNF is used for:

*muscle/joint retraining after injury
*post-operative recovery
*maximizing athletic potential
*recovery of balance and gait after
after traumatic brain injury
*stroke recovery
* management of conditions such as Parkinson’s
*developmental disabilities (such as cerebral palsy)
